Dalm as a Superwhisper alternative, and where Superwhisper is better

Published · Updated

Dalm and Superwhisper both turn speech into text, and both record meetings from the computer with no bot. Superwhisper is the more private of the two: with its local models the speech is recognised on your device, and neither the audio nor the words have to leave it. It also has apps for Windows, iPhone and Android. In Dalm the speech is recognised on your Mac and the audio is not sent anywhere, but the text — dictations and meeting transcripts — syncs to our servers automatically, and a language model writes a summary after each meeting. Choose Dalm for meetings that end as notes; Superwhisper if nothing may leave your computer.

Where Superwhisper is better than Dalm

  • Privacy, plainly. With Superwhisper’s local models, nothing you dictate has to go anywhere: the speech is recognised on your device, and its privacy policy says it collects no audio, no transcriptions and no usage data. Dalm recognises speech on your Mac too, but the text always syncs to our servers, and no setting turns that off. How local and cloud steps differ.
  • Every device you own. Apps for Windows, iPhone and Android as well as the Mac, on one Pro licence. Dalm is a Mac app for Apple Silicon · macOS 15.0 or later.
  • A lower price, and a way to own it. Pro is $8.49 a month or $84.99 a year, and there is a one-time licence. Dalm Pro is $16 a month, or $12 a month billed annually, as a subscription (paid plans are not open yet).
  • Your recordings stay yours to redo. Superwhisper keeps each dictation’s audio next to its text, so you can run it again with other settings. Dalm deletes the audio once the text exists, so a transcript cannot be made again.
  • Control over the model. You pick local or cloud models and let AI modes rewrite what you said. Dalm has no models to choose between.
  • Paperwork for security reviews. Superwhisper states SOC 2 Type II certification and HIPAA compliance. Dalm holds no certification.
  • Retention set by the company. On an Enterprise licence, an organisation can set how long recordings are kept.

Where Dalm is better than Superwhisper

  • Meetings end as notes, not as a recording. After each meeting a language model writes the summary from the transcript and the notes you typed; it is not a mode you set up. In the summary, each point keeps a word-for-word quote. Every quote shows you where it was said — open it and the transcript opens at that place.
  • Voices on the Free plan. Separating who said what, and the summary, come with Dalm’s Free plan; in Superwhisper, speaker separation is part of Pro.
  • Built around the meeting. Dalm asks “Record this meeting?” when Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Slack or FaceTime takes the microphone, records a meeting across a table as well as a call, and gathers tasks and decisions from your meetings into two lists.
  • The same text on every Mac, and in a team. Because the text syncs, your dictations and meetings are there on any Mac you sign in to. On the Team plan, a group shares one dictionary, templates and tags, and dictations stay visible to their author only.
  • One archive. Everything you say lands in one archive you can search: meetings, phone calls, conversations in the room, and what you dictate to a model. Asking one question across all of it is still in development.

Dictation first, or meetings first

The two apps meet in the middle from opposite ends. Superwhisper’s plans and history are organised around dictations: each one is kept as audio and text, can be run again, and can be rewritten by an AI mode; meetings are recorded as audio with speaker labels, and its docs point to a Meeting mode for a basic summary. Dalm is built around what was said in a meeting: the audio is recognised and then deleted, and what stays is a transcript with voices, your notes and a summary with quotes. Dictation in Dalm is the same key in any app, with the same dictionary as your meetings — how dictation works in Dalm.

Bringing recordings over from Superwhisper

Superwhisper keeps its recordings as files in a folder on your computer, and its history can open that folder in Finder. Those files can come into Dalm: it takes audio or video from 0.3 seconds to four hours long, on the Free plan, and reads each one where it is — “The file is processed on this Mac · the original stays where it was” — while the transcript made from it syncs to our servers. Choose “Dictation” for a single voice or “Meeting (several voices)” for a call.

Which one to keep, or both

  • Keep Superwhisper if nothing you say may leave your computer, if you work on Windows or your phone, if you want to pay once, or if you tune models and AI modes yourself.
  • Take Dalm if your day is meetings on a Mac, you want each one to end as a summary without setting anything up, and you want the same text on your other Mac or in your team.
  • Or both. If you dictate with Superwhisper’s local models and keep meetings in Dalm, give the two apps different dictation keys: Dalm’s key can be changed in Settings.

Still choosing a note taker rather than a dictation app? Seven of them, compared by name. Only dictation? Voice to text on a Mac covers the job without names.
