A Google Meet AI note taker for notes that land in your own account
A Google Meet AI note taker turns a Meet call into a transcript and notes. Google has two of its own: transcripts, on Workspace editions that include them, and “Take notes for me”, on an eligible Workspace edition or Google AI plan. Both are saved in the organiser’s Google Drive, and with host controls on, only the host and co-hosts switch them on. Dalm, a Mac app, takes the notes on your side: it records your microphone and the sound your browser plays, and nothing joins the call. Speech is recognised on your Mac and no audio leaves it; the transcript is synced to our servers automatically, and a language model writes the summary. There is a Free plan.
Four kinds of AI note taker for Google Meet, and where the notes end up
| Kind | How it hears the call | Who switches it on | Where the notes end up |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google’s transcripts | Inside Meet, on a computer, laptop or Android device | With Host management off, anyone from the host’s domain; with it on, only the host and co-hosts | The organiser’s Google Drive; a Transcripts icon shows for everyone |
| Google’s “Take notes for me” | Inside Meet; the organiser’s Workspace edition has to include it | With host controls on, only the host and co-hosts | A notes document in the organiser’s Google Drive; everyone is told, and a pencil icon appears |
| A note taker that joins the call | As one more participant in the meeting | Whoever adds it to the meeting | In that service’s account |
| A browser extension | Inside the Meet tab of your browser | You | Depends on the extension; one is compared with Dalm line by line |
| Dalm, on your Mac | Your microphone and the sound your browser plays | You; nothing joins the call, so telling the others is up to you | Your Dalm account; the transcript is synced to our servers |
Choosing a Google Meet note taker comes down to the last column. If the meeting belongs to your own organisation, your Workspace edition includes these features and the notes only need to sit in Drive next to the event, Google’s own may be all you need. Dalm is for the other cases: you join from another organisation and the switch is not yours, your plan does not include them, or Meet is only one of the places you talk — other call apps, a phone on speaker, a table in a meeting room — and the notes should be in one account.
Meet runs in a browser: how Dalm knows the call has started
Google Meet runs in a browser — Chrome, Safari, Arc, Firefox or Edge — so Dalm recognises a Meet call by your calendar. If an event with a link to the call is on right now, a notification asks “Record this meeting?” with a Record button, and the meeting takes the name of the event. With no such event — a link someone dropped into a chat, say — nothing pops up, and you start it yourself with ⌃⌥M or the Meeting button in the menu bar. The notification comes at most once every ten minutes, and “Offer to record when a call starts” in settings turns it off. Either way, two streams are recorded: your microphone, and everything the Mac plays, which on a Meet call is the other people’s voices. Nobody is added to the meeting. If the call’s side arrives as silence, the recording screen says “the other side is not heard” while there is still time to fix it.
What happens to the sound of a Meet call, and to its text
The speech is turned into text on your Mac, and the voices are separated there as well; the sound of the call is sent neither to us nor to a language model. When the transcript is ready, the audio is deleted. The text travels the other way: the transcript, each line with its time and voice number, is synced to our servers automatically, and no setting stops that. A language model reads that text to write the summary. Each piece, and where it lives, is on privacy.
Google Meet notes in your account: transcript, summary, quotes
A Meet call from your calendar keeps the event’s name, so it is easy to find among the others. What you get is a transcript with a time and a voice on every line: your own lines come from the microphone, the rest from the call’s sound. You do not have to name anyone — the summary is built without waiting, and a name the app guesses is marked “Suggested by Dalm — check before you agree.” Whatever you type during the call is what the summary is built around, so these are Google Meet AI notes that start from yours. In the meeting summary, each point keeps a word-for-word quote. Every quote shows you where it was said — open it and the transcript opens at that place. Everything you say lands in one archive you can search: meetings, phone calls, conversations in the room, and what you dictate to a model.
What Dalm does not do on a Google Meet call
- It records sound, not the browser window: Meet’s captions, the chat, a shared screen and the video are not in the transcript.
- It does not announce itself. It is not in the call, so nobody sees an icon from it — say at the start that you are recording; the app reminds you before your first meeting. The rules on recording consent differ by place, and an organisation’s own rules can forbid what the law allows.
- It gives you a draft of what has been said while the call runs; the transcript itself is made when you stop.
- It keeps no recording: there is no player and no audio export.
- A call with fewer than 100 words does not count as a meeting, and a voice is not recognised from one call to the next.
- It runs on a Mac, not on Windows, and it needs an account.
What it costs to take notes from Google Meet calls
Recording a Meet call, the transcript and the summary are part of the Free plan, whichever Workspace edition or Google plan the meeting runs on — and Free is a plan you can stay on, not a trial. Dalm needs a Mac with Apple Silicon · macOS 15.0 or later and an account; until it is public, you get in through the waitlist. What the paid plans add is on the pricing page. For a group that wants one shared dictionary, templates and tags across everyone’s calls, there is the Team plan — see working as a team.
Questions
- Is there a free AI note taker for Google Meet?
- Yes: Dalm's Free plan records a Meet call from your Mac and gives you the transcript and the summary, and it is a plan rather than a trial. Google's own transcripts and "Take notes for me" need a Workspace edition or Google AI plan that includes them. Other kinds of note taker are compared on the page about AI note takers.
- What is the best AI note taker for Google Meet?
- It depends on where the notes should end up. If everyone is in one organisation whose edition includes it, Google's "Take notes for me" keeps them in the organiser's Drive. If you join other organisations' calls, or also talk in other apps and in the room, an app that records the call's sound on your Mac works the same way everywhere — that is what Dalm does. Products are compared by name on the page about the best AI note takers.
- Does Google Meet have its own note taker?
- Yes. "Take notes for me" writes a notes document after the meeting and saves it in the organiser's Google Drive; it needs an eligible Workspace edition or Google AI plan, and the organiser's edition must include it. Everyone in the call is told, and a pencil icon appears on their screens. Separately, Meet makes transcripts on Workspace editions that have them. How Google's own notes compare with Dalm is set out line by line.
- Is there a Google Meet notetaker that does not join as a bot?
- Dalm is one. It is an app on your Mac that records your microphone and the sound of the call, so nobody is added to the meeting and nobody is notified by it — which is why telling the others is up to you. How this compares with note takers that join is on the page comparing meeting recorders.
- How do I record a Google Meet or get its transcript?
- Meet's own recording and transcripts depend on your Google plan and on your place in the meeting; the steps, and what works on a free account, are in the guide to recording a Google Meet. Dalm skips the recording: it turns the call's sound into a transcript on your Mac, no audio leaves it, and the transcript is synced to our servers.
- What if the Meet call is not in my calendar?
- Start it yourself with ⌃⌥M or the Meeting button. Without a current event with the call link, Dalm does not offer to record, and the meeting is named by the model from what was said; until then, by its start time.
